"Re-Thinking Strategy Thinking"

22nd October 2009, London

Cognosis recently hosted the ‘Re-Thinking Strategic Thinking’ Breakfast Briefing to discuss ways in which leaders can stimulate and leverage great strategic insight. Although not applicable to all teams, the general consensus from the event group discussion was that most annual strategic planning processes have significant room to improve.

Traditional frameworks for strategic thinking emphasise planning tools and techniques, but pay far less attention to the power of strategic intuition and the instinctive understanding of ‘what works.’ Cognosis’ framework for strategic thinking makes the case for an environment in which social/cultural/political instinct, operational awareness and strategic intuition are allowed to develop ensuring a more effective and successful strategy.

  • The implementation of strategic intuition can be a stumbling block to action and therefore understanding the cultural/political backdrop is vital to success.
  • Within every organisation it is key to have buy-in to the strategy from a significant percentage of the team - and most importantly the wider leadership team in order to secure support from within - particularly given the short-term requirements of organisations to deliver results.
  • Idea generation and insight knows no boundaries and is not specific to individuals or roles and comes from people’s interpretation of analysis of data and information which informs decisions/actions.

Sally Cohen

ex-Managing Director

  • Hearing Richard speak reminds me how challenging but ultimately exciting the strategy process can be. Challenging because it isn't easy to do it right, but exciting because you know when you have it right--and that eureka moment is very rewarding.
  • It is a relief to hear from other business executives who are dealing with similar issues in their very different industries. It can be quite lonely championing a holistic approach in a one-dimensional company or pushing for a non-traditional solution in a tradition-bound culture. Hearing other execs whose championing paid off gives you the impetus to not give up!
