Unlocking US growth with a data led market sizing strategy
The Challenge
After strong success in the UK, Pinter launched in the United States and wanted to understand a growth opportunity - how large the potential US market could be. The team needed to quantify the opportunity in terms of customer base and revenue potential to help shape strategy and support conversations with commercial partners.
While Pinter had carried out some initial, high-level analysis internally, they wanted a more robust, data-led approach grounded in credible external sources. Cognosis was selected for its experience in the beer and beverage industry, strong track record in market sizing, and understanding of the dynamics of the US market.
Our Approach
Cognosis developed a structured but flexible approach, combining data analysis, customer insight, and validation at each stage to build a reliable picture of market potential.
1. Understanding the product and the customer
We began by immersing ourselves in the Pinter proposition, to understand the current customer base, what drives purchasing behaviour, and what factors might influence adoption in a new market.
2. Building the data foundation
Using detailed US Census data, we modelled population segments that matched Pinter’s ideal customer profile. These were then refined using proxy indicators such as interest in home entertaining, to produce a realistic view of the potential customer base.
3. Validating assumptions
To ensure the findings reflected market reality, we compared our model against industry benchmarks, including craft beer and home-brewing statistics. We also looked at comparable product categories within the premium home and lifestyle market to ensure our sizing was credible.
4. Translating insight into opportunity
By overlaying Pinter’s own customer segmentation, we were able to estimate purchasing frequency and lifetime value, distinguishing between casual and repeat users. This allowed us to translate the customer universe into a tangible revenue opportunity.
5. Collaboration and refinement
Throughout the project, we worked closely with Pinter’s leadership - reviewing interim results and refining assumptions to ensure the model reflected their commercial reality and growth ambitions.
Cognosis are well plugged into the industry we work in, and that really helped in developing our understanding of the size of the opportunity in our bid to become the market leader in Direct-to-Consumer.
